Subject Areas

  • Math (Number Sense, Algebraic Thinking)
  • Logic & Pattern Recognition
  • STEAM Education
  • Cryptography Foundations (Intro)

Learning Objectives

  • Translate colors into numeric values using a coded reference.
  • Practice number recognition, patterning, and symbolic substitution.
  • Decode and encode visual patterns using Pix Brix.
  • Build early algebraic and cryptographic thinking skills.
  • Enhance visual processing and motor coordination through physical modeling.

Materials Used

  • Pix Brix (assorted colors with a numerical key)
  • “Write the Code” worksheets (download above)
  • Pencils or markers
  • Optional: laminated versions for reuse, Pix Brix baseplates

Lesson Breakdown

Lesson 1: Color-to-Number Matching

  • Introduce the color-to-number concept using the Pix Brix key.
  • Students fill in worksheet numbers by decoding each colored sequence.

Lesson 2: Number-to-Color Encoding

  • Students are given number sequences and must build them using colored Pix Brix.
  • Check for accuracy by decoding builds back into numbers.

Lesson 3: Secret Code Challenge

  • Create a secret message with a pattern of colored Pix Brix.
  • Students decode messages into numeric sequences using the key.
  • Optionally, tie numbers to letters or words for added challenge.

Lesson 4: Create & Crack

  • Students design their own color-to-number key system.
  • Encode and decode original sequences with classmates using Pix Brix.
  • Encourages logic, abstraction, and pattern design.

Assessment

  • Accuracy in decoding colored patterns to numeric sequences.
  • Correct encoding of numeric sequences into physical Pix Brix models.
  • Participation in code challenges and logic puzzles.
  • Optional: explanation or presentation of created code systems.

ESA Alignment

This unit uses Pix Brix as a supplemental educational tool in math and logic instruction. The worksheet and activity set connects tactile and visual learning with numeric reasoning and symbolic logic, meeting ESA criteria for “educational purpose.”

Submission Instructions

  • Include this curriculum plan with your ESA reimbursement request.
  • Attach receipts for Pix Brix materials.
  • Submit examples of student-completed worksheets or photos of code builds (optional).
  • Upload materials via ClassWallet under “Supplemental Materials.”
