Subject Areas

  • Math (Number Sense)
  • Art (Color Theory, Pixel Art)
  • STEAM Integration
  • Visual Processing and Pattern Recognition

Learning Objectives

  • Match numbers with corresponding colors from a provided key.
  • Create pixel art images by following a number-to-color code system.
  • Build and/or color detailed designs with Pix Brix based on numeric guides.
  • Improve number recognition, spatial awareness, and visual logic.
  • Strengthen fine motor control and attention to detail.

Materials Used

  • Pix Brix for physical building (recommended full 32-color palette)
  • Printed “Color by Number” Worksheets (download above)
  • Color chart reference (included on each worksheet)
  • Pencil, markers, crayons (for coloring option)

Lesson Breakdown

Lesson 1: Number & Color Matching

  • Review the full color palette and number key.
  • Identify numbers in the worksheet and match to correct color.
  • Start coloring or building small sections to practice recognition.

Lesson 2: Build Full Pixel Art Image

  • Complete the full image using the number-to-color system.
  • Use Pix Brix to create a 2D version physically or color it on the worksheet.

Lesson 3: Independent Build

  • Choose a new worksheet to complete independently.
  • Students check their work against the color key.

Lesson 4: Create Your Own (Extension)

  • Students create their own pixel image on a blank grid template.
  • Assign color codes and trade with a peer to complete.

Assessment

  • Correct use of colors matched to assigned numbers.
  • Accuracy and completion of worksheet designs.
  • Optional: Peer-reviewed custom designs or group feedback.
  • Participation and consistency in pattern following.

ESA Alignment

This unit uses Pix Brix to support core skills in math and visual arts through a structured, guided activity. The worksheets require symbolic interpretation, sequencing, and color application — all of which meet ESA’s criteria for “educational purpose” under supplemental instructional materials.

Submission Instructions

  • Include this curriculum write-up when submitting to ESA/ClassWallet.
  • Attach receipts for Pix Brix purchases.
  • Submit photos of builds or completed worksheets (optional).
  • Upload all documentation under “Supplemental Materials.”
